An essential component of most solar charging systems over 10W. A charge controller protects your battery from overcharging.
If it has reverse polarity protection, a charge controller protects your panel by acting as a blocking diode.
If it has a low voltage disconnect (LVD) facility, a solar charge controller (also called a solar regulator) will protect the battery from draining.
Choosing a charge controller As a rule of thumb, if the current rating of the panel is more than 1% of your battery capacity, you need a regulator. Match the current rating of the panel with the solar input rating of the regulator.
