The human race is not a frugal one. We waste. A lot. This is the overriding fact that lies at the root of so many of the problems that are afflicting the environmental wellbeing of the little green and blue ball of rock and water we call the planet. Instead of using just what is needed, mankind has a spectacular capacity for flagrant abuse and avarice.
This is no more true than it is with regards to our energy demands. We use a staggering amount of the stuff and it is beginning to run scarce. Energy frugality will definitely be the new buzzword for the century.
One of the best ways I have found to save money on the heating bill and reduce the amount of energy I'm using is to stop heating rooms that are rarely used. Your furnace works hard to keep every room in your house warm and cosy all winter, but if you're paying to heat rooms you don't spend much time in, then you're wasting both energy and money. According to the government, lowering your thermostat one degree can reduce your heating bill by 1%.
Make sure the room with your thermostat is getting plenty of heat, but close heat vents and doors in rarely used rooms to reduce your energy consumption and lower your heating bills. Once you've taken this simple step, you may notice that your house has fewer drafts and warms up faster.
